Andy Warhol, New York, 1986
Thain photographed Warhol with a banana one of the objects that Warhol made his icons. After the portrait session, Thain had the option to ask him to sign a range of objects. In the spirit of a “Warholian” throw away gesture Thain asked him to sign the banana. He ate the banana on the way back to the Chelsea Hotel and lobbed the skin into a passing bin from a new York taxi, with a sense of regret, at his earlier decision.
